Over the past couple of months, our group has embarked on an extraordinary journey with the hopes of discovering and learning more about the Burmese migrant community here in Singapore. While we seek to find out who these people are, the reasons that led them to coming here, and how they have coped with the different problems and stress they encountered, we realised that the Burmese people here have built a close-knitted network within themselves. This network is invaluable as it represents an identity so familiar in a foreign country.
We have explored two different spaces in particular on this journey, namely the Peninsula Plaza and the Burmese Buddhist Temple. And we have covered various aspects of the Burmese community through our interviews with Mr Khun and Venerable Kwa Wnta, with them sharing some rather personal information with us regarding the community. In the next few articles, we will be sharing with all of you the work of Thazin Success Magazine, Singapore, a Burmese Lifestyle Magazine published in Singapore and circulated in Singapore, Johor, KL, Penang and many other areas. We have been lucky enough to be able to speak to Ms Thazin Thant, the daughter of the company who shared with us many invaluable insights of the Burmese community, their contributions and work as a publisher as well as their own family account about coming to Singapore.
